This includes specialized neonatal care i.e. delivery room resuscitation, stabilization, initiation of infant treatment and necessary procedures, prescribing diagnostic testing, medications and therapies, and providing family support.   NNP's are in a clinical leadership position in the NICU. Additional responsibilities include select nursing and medical staff education; consultation; advocacy for patients, families and nursing staff; involvement in professional development and research; participation and leadership in unit committees and councils; improvement of unit-specific neonatal outcomes. Essential Functions Clinical Judgment Obtains and summarizes a complete health history, performs a comprehensive physical examination, synthesizes and interprets multiple sources of data, makes accurate clinical diagnoses, and formulates an individual treatment plan with expected outcomes. Completes documentation in a timely manner. Performs needed diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated within scope of practice. Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, diagnostic measures, nursing therapeutics, equipment, procedures and treatments to meet the needs of patients and families, populations and community in accordance with professional preparation, institutional privileges, state and federal laws and practice acts.   Caring Practices Recognizes and tailors caring practices to the individuality of patient and family, empowering them to maintain their own optimal level of care. Models therapeutic relationships with the patient and family that facilitate mutual involvement in planning care.   Collaboration Collaborates with nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues in order to comprehensively address patient and family health needs. Initiates consultation to obtain resources as necessary to facilitate progress toward achieving identified patient outcomes. Coordinates the care of patients utilizing system and community resources to enhance delivery of care; assure successful health, illness, and wellness transitions; and achieve optimal patient outcomes. Regularly attends NNP meetings/conferences.   Clinical Inquiry Uses research-based evidence, outcome data, and experience to formulate, evaluate, and/or revise treatment plans, policies, procedures, and standards of care to enhance nursing clinical practice and to promote excellence in patient care. Develops and/or participates in research/outcomes studies to evaluate patient care issues, products, and technology. Contributes to the development of interdisciplinary standards of practice and evidence-based guidelines for care.   Response to Diversity Recognizes the importance of delivering health care to meet the diverse needs and strengths of patient, family, staff, and systems. Integrates the unique concerns and value system of patient, family, nursing staff, and team into patient’s plan of care.   Facilitation of Learning Provides patient/family teaching, utilizing education tools and resources when appropriate. Synthesizes interdisciplinary care recommendations/educational plans into the patient and family education process. Evaluates patient/family educational materials and identifies need for revisions or development of new materials. Facilitates the provision of clinically competent care by staff/team through education and role modeling.   Systems Thinking Identifies clinical problems within the context of the organizational/system structure, mission, strategic objectives, culture, policies, and resources. Collaborates with the entire team to optimize patient care delivery and patient safety during system changes.   Advocacy/Moral Agency Identifies ethical conflicts or issues that may surface in clinical setting, and prepares patient and family as well as clinical team to address them. Establishes an environment that promotes ethical decision-making and patient advocacy. Provides patients and families with appropriate information to help them participate and/or make informed decisions about health care and treatments, including health promotion and disease prevention.
