Continuation past the term length discussed will be based on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding.   POSITION SPECIFICS The Department of Animal Science at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant Clinical Professor of Equine Reproduction . This position is a 48-week academic year, non-tenure line faculty appointment with 75% extension and 25% teaching responsibilities and is located on the University Park campus. This faculty member will be part of a team of other equine faculty and staff within the department who collaborate to support equine teaching, extension and research efforts. This faculty member will be part of the Equine Extension Team within the Animal Systems group in extension. The Penn State Quarter Horse breeding program includes 60-70 high quality horses, made up of broodmares, stallions, and young stock. These animals are housed in two barns and over 60 acres, all on the University Park campus. Pertinent to this position is Penn State’s Center for Reproductive Biology and Health , offering unique collaborative opportunities with a strong cohort of reproduction focused faculty. The successful applicant will be expected to teach and further develop the equine reproduction component of the Equine Science Minor , oversee breeding and foaling of the Penn State Quarter Horse herd, and to develop extension programing related to equine reproduction, health, and performance. Responsibilities include: Develop a robust equine extension program in reproductive management targeted to veterinarians and breeding farm managers as part of the Penn State Equine Extension Team. Collaborate with the Extension Equine Team to enhance the breeding and reproductive management components as well as veterinary care portions of current programs.  Extension education programs utilize a variety of methodologies including in-person workshops, training clinics, online webinars, podcasts, videos, social media posts, print articles, fact sheets and other media as appropriate. Teaching responsibilities to include: Animal Science 457:  Equine Reproduction and Breeding Farm Management Animal Science 357:  Equine Broodmare and Foal Care parts of Animal Science 327:  Horse Production and Management Provide reproductive veterinary services for the Penn State Quarter Horse breeding program, with the goal of between 15-25 live foals annually. Additionally providing preventative, clinical, and diagnostic veterinary services to horses owned by Penn State. Collaborate with equine and other faculty to secure extramural funding for the equine extension, research and teaching programs.  Conducting applied research in the area of equine reproduction, health and performance that is complementary to extension programs at Penn State is encouraged. Advise and mentor students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine and equine studies. Participate in the advising of equine or other animal science related student organizations, including groups like the Collegiate Horsemen at Penn State and the Equine Research Team. Qualifications : A DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited school and license to practice veterinary medicine in Pennsylvania is required. The successful candidate must have a strong and demonstrable understanding of applied equine reproductive management and horsemanship skills. Excellent communication skills and evidence of effective teaching are essential. Applicants with experience teaching in classroom or clinical situations related to horses, equine reproduction, or equine health will receive special consideration. Also, those with strong professional connections in the horse industry will receive special consideration.
