Department: ICE | LPSL CPATH Microbiology Staff Department's Website: Summary of Job Duties: The Medical Laboratory Scientist I performs routine and moderately complex laboratory tests on patient specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Working under general supervision, the MLS I operates automated and manual laboratory equipment, follows established procedures and quality control standards, and ensures accurate, timely reporting of test results Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's). ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of eligibility). Additional Information: Job Requirements: Performs testing of patient samples, interprets, reviews, and prepares patient test results for review by the Supervisor and/or Medical Director. May or may not be trained on all benches, but is progressively increasing in knowledge and experience. Maintains all aspects of QC and QA relevant to the CAP certification standards. Interacts with staff from various departments to coordinate the proper acquisition, testing and reporting of patient test results. Ensures that the supplies used in the testing of patient samples are available in adequate quantities and that they are used efficiently. Assist in employee/student training and employee competency as assigned. Special projects and other duties as assigned.
