Maine Revenue Services Sales, Fuel & Special Tax Division   Opening Date:   January 21, 2026 Closing Date:   February 4, 2026   Grade / Admin Unit:   18 / Professional/Technical Job Class Code:  0511 Salary: $32.40- $33.70*/Hourly(*Includes 27.25% recruitment and retention stipend)    Position Number: 016304031 Location:  Augusta JOB DESCRIPTION: This is administrative work involving the examination, assessment and collection of various State taxes; responsibilities also include responding to taxpayer questions or concerns. Work is performed under limited supervision. REPRESENTATIVE TASKS: Reviews tax returns, applications and records for completeness and accuracy. Calculates amount of sales, excise, income tax and/or other taxes due in order to make assessments. Reviews information from various sources to identify potential non-filers. Contacts taxpayers in writing or by telephone for a variety of reasons including to clarify assessments imposed on them. Establishes ability to pay and collects taxes through telephone contact or enforced collection measures; negotiates payment terms. Discusses and explains various tax forms, laws, and policies with taxpayers and their representatives. Interprets and applies federal and state tax codes for personal, business, and corporate taxes. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of State tax laws, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of accounting procedures and systems. Knowledge of state and federal tax forms. Knowledge of computerized taxation system. Knowledge of tax collection procedures. Ability to negotiate tax payment plans. Ability to explain tax laws, rules, procedures, and forms. Ability to deal effectively with taxpayers. Ability to present and defend technical and administrative decisions. Ability to write clear, concise reports. Ability to examine tax returns/forms and detect irregularities and errors. Ability to apply business mathematics in defining and solving problems associated with tax enforcement and compliance. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution -OR- a four (4) year combination of training, education, and/or experience in business, computer science, banking/finance, accounting and/or tax collection work.
