DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, CONSERVATION & FORESTRY MAINE HARNESS RACING COMMISSION VETERINARIAN Opening Date: January 27, 2026 Closing Date: End of day February 09, 2026 Location: Augusta Position Number: 00500-0091 Class Code: 9149 Grade: 29 (Professional/Technical Unit) Salary: $62,275.20 - $87,422.40 Per Year BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is professional services and scientific work involving the practice of veterinary medicine. Responsibilities include implementing and overseeing assigned domestic animal or poultry disease control program, or providing veterinary services at major horse racing tracks. Work is performed under limited supervision. REPRESENTATIVE TASKS: Plans and implements assigned disease control program in order to control disease. Tests samples and animals or poultry in order to determine presence of disease. Investigates alleged violations of regulations and incidents of reportable diseases in order to determine facts and recommend appropriate action. Advises veterinarians and livestock or poultry producers in order to prevent or control disease. Treats ill and injured race horses at race tracks in order to ensure animals receive required treatment. Oversees sampling program for race horses in order to detect illegal drugs. Testifies in court in order to provide evidence concerning the drugging of race horses. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of principles and practices of veterinary medicine. Knowledge of disease control, prevention, and eradication. Knowledge of veterinary pharmacopoeia. Ability to perform ante and post-mortem inspections of animals and correctly interpret finding. Ability to identify diseases in animals or poultry and apply proper control methods. Ability to prepare accurate records and complete reports. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: ( These may be acquired on the job and are needed to perform the work assigned): Knowledge of federal and state laws governing the eradication and control of diseases in animals and poultry. Knowledge of laboratory test procedures for disease identification. Knowledge of agency reporting procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Degree in Veterinary Medicine. LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A License to practice veterinary medicine in Maine.
