Student Technician Training Program (STTP) Category: Part-Time Temporary Training Position Supervisor: Site Referee General Description: The Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC) Smog Check Referee Program supports the training of hundreds of future smog technicians through the Student Technician Training Program (STTP). The STTP is a comprehensive 240 hour training program (240 max. Periodically, shorter term programs may be available), which employs extensive hands-on exercises designed to aid in the preparation of automotive students focused on becoming professional smog technicians. Because students train alongside the Referee in a “real-world” environment with live vehicles, the STTP reinforces the core skills needed to become a successful smog technician. Additionally, it gives each student training in the areas of safety, communication, and administration. This additional training helps to ensure students learn the essential skills necessary in order to become a competent, high performing professional technician in today’s automotive test and repair industry. Purpose: By training alongside the Referee, Student Technicians receive invaluable hands-on experience by performing vehicle emissions and other inspections, while assisting California motorists that require Referee services. The STTP includes structured training modules covering key competency areas that are essential to becoming a successful smog technician. Student Requirements: Must have successfully completed at a minimum, BAR Level 1 Inspector training Must provide a letter of recommendation from their automotive instructor Must maintain both a cumulative and a semester minimum GPA of 2.0 during their training Must carry a minimum of 6 semester units (or equivalent), courses must be in Automotive Technology or required courses for a degree or certificate in Automotive Technology Must be focused and committed to becoming a professional smog technician The STTP is intended for only the most determined students’ that are committed to becoming professional smog technicians. Students who at any time fail to maintain the above minimum requirements, or stray from being committed to being a professional technician (as determined by FCCC), may be terminated at any time A valid CA Driver License is required Must pass drug-screening and background checks Students accepted into the program must register on the CalARC website upon hiring, and complete a survey at the end of training.
