Pew Research Center’s work is carried out by a staff of about 1 80 .     Position Summary     The Editorial Specialist   is part of   the Short Reads   team at Pew Research Center ( the   organization’s   data journalism blog ) and   assists   with   copy editing, proofreading ,   number - checking, fact- checking   and quality control in a data-driven environment .   The role includes   copy   editing   and ch ecking   digital   content including blog posts ,   research   reports ,   newsletters,   graphics   and   social media posts , with occasional opportunities for original research and writing.   The   Editorial Specialist   work s   closely with researchers, writers ,   editors, graphic artists, web producers   and communications and social media staff to   improve   publications   across research areas   within the Center. This position reports to the Associate Director, Short Reads.       Primary Responsibilities     Responsible for copy   editing   publications including   blog posts,   reports,   graphics,   newsletters   and social media posts     Ensures that all published   materials meet the highest standards for   spelling, grammar, style, clarity,   accuracy   and appropriateness   Looks for inconsistencies of thought,   development   or organization   Confers with authors   regarding   direction,   tone   and language   Helps   coordinate the flow of copy through the editorial process   Regularly serves as a number - checker, verifying the accuracy of publications using internal and external data sources   Contributes   original   research   or writing   for editorial projects   as needed       Education/Training/Experience     Bachelor’s degree   required ,   plus 3 years of relevant experience ,   preferably in   data   j ournalism,   research,   c ommunications   or related field   Familiarity with copy editing and proofreading    Experienced   proficiency   with current Associated Press style   required   Experience with fact-checking and/or checking numbers and calculations     Experience working with numbers and data trends; familiarity with data journalism concepts a plus   Experience   demonstrating   news judgment          Knowledge and Skill Requirements     Basic copy editing,   proofreading   and writing skills      Ability to edit work in the Center’s neutral, nonpartisan   voice   and style    Awareness of language trends in sensitive topics such as gender and race    Attention to detail and accuracy, both in presenting numbers  and in language   Ability to work independently to meet daily deadlines and turn around production of   new content   quickly    Ability to work in fast-paced collaborative environment   Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel , as well as Associated Press style   Experience using statistical software   such as   SPSS or R strongly preferred       FLSA Status:   Exempt     The typical starting salary for this position is $ 73,000.     Hybrid Work Schedule:  Pew Research Center staff are required to be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office three core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).   Staff may work  virtually from  remote locations on other days in a typical work week.       Application Procedure:  Click on the Apply button, and complete required fields.
