Job Responsibilities: This is a research internship position within the Advanced Robotics team in the Corporate Engineering and R&D department. The team focuses on developing innovative technologies that enable robots with human-like perception and dexterity. The candidate will design and develop simulation pipelines for robot controller design and will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of a Motion Planning & Controls Technical Specialist. The Magna Student Program provides students with practical work experience related to the automotive industry. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop a ROS 2-based robotic simulation pipeline for controller design. Create case studies to understand system capabilities and limitations. Develop, modify, and implement software packages for practical applications. Create evaluation criteria to test and assess system effectiveness. Support robotic controller testing on real robots. Present technical results and provide recommendations based on case studies. Qualifications: Understanding of control theory and implementation of control algorithms for robotic manipulation tasks. Prior experience with ROS 2, including control messages and plugins. Knowledge of collision physics and dynamics for contact-rich manipulation. Ability to use physics models for contact-based manipulation tasks. Proficiency in coding and scripting in Python, C++, and ROS 2. Experience with simulation tools such as Webots, Mujoco, Drake, CopelliaSim, NVIDIA Isaac Sim, Gazebo. Strong understanding of robotics fundamentals. Curious, collaborative team player with the ability to thrive in a small team environment. Education/Experience: Currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or PhD), preferably focusing on Robotics, Controls, or Motion Planning for manipulators. Physical Demands/Work Environment: Ability to sit or stand comfortably for extended periods in an office environment (e.g., Holly, MI).
