Location: NYC NoHo Office (5 days a week) About This Opportunity Build AI features that millions of people use, embedded with some of the most interesting product teams in Automattic's portfolio. You'll work either directly with teams like Clay, Beeper, and Pocket Casts, products with strong technical foundations and opportunities to integrate AI in genuinely useful ways. Or you’ll be working on building AI features for core products like WordPress.com, WooCommerce, etc. This is for engineers who want to ship fast, work in-person with small focused teams, and see their AI features go from idea to production in weeks, not quarters. You'll spend your time in the NYC office where you'll collaborate with the NYC AI team and be included in AI adoption, enablement, and helping build Applied AI as a brand. If you're an AI engineer who's tired of integrating ChatGPT into yet another wrapper app and wants to build features that genuinely improve products people love, this is it. Why This Role Matters Most AI engineers are either (1) building foundation models they'll never use, or (2) integrating ChatGPT into yet another generic wrapper. This role is different: you're building AI features for products people actually use and love. Clay helps people manage relationships better. Beeper unifies messaging across platforms. Pocket Casts helps people discover and enjoy podcasts. These are real products with real users who will genuinely benefit from thoughtful AI integration, not hype-driven features that get disabled after three months. You'll have unusual freedom: small teams that move fast, profitable company with no runway pressure, direct access to users, and the distribution of Automattic's ecosystem behind you. What You'll Do Ship AI features for core products like WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, etc, or Other Bets products (Clay's relationship intelligence, Beeper's messaging experiences, Pocket Casts' discovery and transcription). Work embedded with product teams; you're not a consultant dropping in - you're part of the team. Prototype rapidly and iterate based on real user feedback; go from concept to production in weeks. Build both user-facing features and the infrastructure to support them (we care about both polish and scale). Collaborate in-person in NYC 5 days/week with engineers, PMs, and designers. Stay current on AI developments and help teams understand what's actually useful versus what's hype. You'll Thrive Here If You Have experience shipping production AI features to consumers. You've dealt with LLMs in production, not just in demos. Are strong in TypeScript or PHP (or both). This is where modern AI engineering happens, and it's the stack for most of Automattic. Are product-minded. You think about user experience, not just model performance. Move fast and ship often. You're comfortable with ambiguity and prefer iterating with users over perfecting in isolation. Work well in small teams. You're self-directed but collaborate naturally. Want to be in a NYC office 5 days/week. You value in-person collaboration and moving fast. Technical Experience We Value Production experience with LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar APIs) including prompt engineering, RAG, and fine-tuning. Strong TypeScript/JavaScript or PHP (ideally both, but deep expertise in one is fine). Building user-facing features, not just backend infrastructure. Understanding of system design and how AI features scale. Experience with modern frontend frameworks (React, etc.). Bonus Points Built AI features for consumer products with real usage at scale. Experience with messaging platforms, audio/podcasting apps, or relationship management tools. Open source contributions in AI tooling or product features. Previous startup experience, especially in early-stage environments.
