ESSENTIAL TASKS The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Install, tests, inspects, locates, troubleshoots, evaluates, monitor, maintains and repairs all components and assets of the County’s water distribution and wastewater collection system; Prepares and maintains accurate work records; Assists with construction and installation projects as assigned; Performs general building and grounds maintenance and repair work as required; maintains neat and safe shop areas. Operates heavy equipment including loaders, mowers, trucks and cranes. Works outside of regular work schedule to include on-call, holidays, nights, and weekends when needed. Respond and follow through with work order request. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety. Attends meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. Considered essential employee in the event of inclement weather or emergency conditions. All other duties as assigned. INVOLVEMENT WITH DATA, PEOPLE, AND THINGS DATA INVOLVEMENT : Requires collecting, analyzing, copying, transcribing, entering and/or posting data and information. PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT : Requires speaking and/or signaling to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.  Be able to communicate clearly to customers, both internal and external. INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS : Requires operating and/or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as public utility equipment and systems, heavy equipment and vehicles; may involve installation and testing.  Involves operations of limited scope. COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS REASONING REQUIREMENTS : Requires constant problem-solving. Be able to analyze and use logic to justify decision making process.  Must be able to perceive off normal conditions. MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS : Requires using basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra involving variables and formulas plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes.  Must be able to use a calculator to determine changes in pump run times, tank changes, etc. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS : Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS : Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION : Requires high school diploma, GED or equivalent.  Specialized vocational training or technical diploma is desirable. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Must possess a valid state driver’s license.  Possession of South Carolina Commercial Driver’s license is preferred. Must obtain “B” Commercial Driver’s License within 18 months. Must obtain Class “D” Water Distribution and/or “D” Wastewater Collections within 12 months of hire.  May require to pursue higher certifications/licenses. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Requires one year of relevant experience. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, shoveling, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS : This position is a safety sensitive position.  The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, confined spaces, animals/wildlife, disease/pathogens, poisonous plants, trees, shrubs, difficult terrain, pressurized system.  May require to wear respirators in needed areas. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS : The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, texture perception, and odor perception. JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS : Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions affecting a few co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
