Job Description The Role   The rapid adoption of advanced software in vehicles marks a new era for automakers and consumers—bringing both opportunity and complexity.   At General Motors, our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) organization is built on software engineering principles. We design and build software that improves the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of large-scale distributed systems, enabling teams to move fast without sacrificing quality.   We are looking for strong Software Engineers to join our SRE team as hands-on Individual Contributors. In this role, you will build automation, develop reliability tooling, and partner closely with product engineering teams to ensure services are designed and   operated   with reliability in mind from day one. Rather than focusing solely on operations, this role emphasizes writing software to solve production problems and reduce operational toil at scale.   As a Software Engineer in SRE, you will work across the full lifecycle of services—from design and implementation to operating systems in production.   You’ll   take ownership of improving system behavior through automation, instrumentation, and thoughtful engineering, while contributing to a culture of shared responsibility where teams build and run their services together.   What   You’ll   Do    Design, build, and   maintain   software solutions that automate operational workflows and improve the reliability, scalability, and performance of production services.   Apply software engineering best practices to reduce toil, improve resiliency, and enable systems to   operate   reliably at scale.   Partner closely with product and platform engineering teams to improve production readiness, service quality, and long-term maintainability.   Instrument services with   appropriate metrics , logging, and tracing to support observability, proactive issue detection, and data-driven decision making.   Participate in a shared on-call rotation, responding to production incidents ,   and focusing on long-term fixes rather than short-term mitigations.   Contribute to incident analysis and post-incident reviews,   identifying   systemic improvements and driving continuous reliability enhancements.   Support and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes to enable safe, repeatable, and efficient releases.   Collaborate on cost-aware engineering decisions that balance performance, reliability, and infrastructure efficiency.   Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)   Strong software engineering experience with   proficiency   in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, or Go.   5+ years of experience   in   software engineering,   including experience working with production or   site   reliability teams .   Experience designing, building, and operating backend or distributed systems in a production environment.   Solid understanding of system fundamentals, including how applications interact with operating systems, networks, data structures, and infrastructure.   Demonstrated experience building automation, internal tooling, or reliability improvements that reduce manual effort and improve system behavior.   Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, version control systems, and modern software development workflows.   Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively across engineering teams and take shared ownership of services in production.   What Will Give You   a   Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)   Experience working in or alongside a Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) or production engineering environment.   Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.   Exposure to observability concepts, including metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting.   Experience with containerized environments and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.   Experience   participating   in on-call rotations, incident response, root cause analysis, or post-incident reviews.   Experience   operating   or supporting large-scale distributed systems in production.   Prior production experience with Java-based services.   Compensation : The compensation information is a good faith estimate only.
